    Giay ethnic people’s New Year Festival in Ha Giang

    The Giay ethnic people’s New Year Festival (the drum dancing festival) in Tat Nga commune, Meo Vac district, the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang is held annually during the first lunar month. After the ritual offering, traditional spring customs will be performed including drum dancing with an aim to pray for prosperity, peace and fine weather throughout the year. The Giay ethnic people’s New Year Festival in Tat Nga commune was also added to the list of national intangible cultural heritages.

    Offerings are made by women in the village and the offerings are delivered to a temple in the village.

    The magic drum is struck during the ritual offering, the magic drum is brought to each house in the village to bring luck to the villagers. traditional customs are performed around the drum by young people in the village.

    After the ritual offering, joining some vivid activities (singing and dancing) and some folkgames such as striking Yen, throwing Con. New Year festival of the Giay ethnic people was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
