Just across the street from the Temple of Literature, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum can be easily spottedfrom afar. Like many other buildings that house museums in Hanoi, it was built in the 1930s as a Girl School for Indochina high-ranked officers. In 1966, it officially became Vietnam Fine Arts Museum where store many of Vietnamese artistic essences.
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum was originally built by the French in 30s of the 20th century with the function as a place for the daughter of French officials in Indochina. In 1962, with the permission of the Government, Ministry of Culture, it is renovated and added the decorative architecture of Vietnam village in order to display arts of Vietnam. In 1966, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum was officially inaugurated with a surface area of 4200 m2 and a display area is 1200 m2. In 1997-1999, it has been expanded with a total area of 4737m2.
The displays system of the Museum has several times been added so as to preserve and honor the unique aesthetic value and essence of the nation in the history of art shaped of Vietnam. Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is preserved over 18.0000 artifacts in the water that represents the Vietnam Fine Arts from prehistoric time to now. Here, there is also exhibited painting of some famous artists of Vietnam such as: Nguyen Gia Tri, To Ngoc Van, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Phan Chanh, Luong Xuan Nhi…
In order to confirm the role of the Museum as a bridge between the past, present and suggest future directions for the country’s art, since 1997, the museum has been extended significantly on a display area and the number of artifacts. The museum has also innovation in the storage and display artifacts. The Vietnam Fine Art Museum also initiated the renovation and interior lighting solutions in accordance with characteristics of Vietnam Fine Art and tries to achieve international standards. To expand the introduction of the art of Vietnam to the region and the world, Vietnam Fine Art museum is promoting the introduction of 50 files to the internet and strengthening the exchanges paintings between Vietnam with other countries to enrich the treasure house of art.
